It is no doubt that the fashion industry was quite busy the whole of 2016 (Still is actually). Everyone from fashion designers, stylists, brand managements, models, etc. were busy perfecting their craft and making sure we look good and are updated on trends both on and offline. In October 2016  the Abryanz Style and Fashion Awards released their list of Nominees and voting lines opened last week on the 7th of November Midnight, we are happy that Zimbabwe seems to have represented Southern Africa pretty well. Our fashion icons’ work paid off and now it’s up to us to vote and make sure they bring the awards home. Before I share how to vote, here is who to vote for and the respective categories.

Kidd Hunta, an emerging Zim clothing label founded by Taf The Taylor (Tafadzwa Moyo) which draws strength from a strong African past and runs courageously into the future was nominated in the Fashion Designer of the year category under Southern Africa. In the same category is fellow Harare based designer Intisaar Mukadam who specializes in women’s fashion and knitwear inspired by rich and historical tribal traditions and African diversity. Super couple Elikem and Pokello are nominated for the most stylish couple which is only befitting as they have been sentting trends in fashion for some time now. The gorgeous Vimbai Mutinhiri is nominated for the best dressed media personality/ entertainers of the year whilst Craig Zoowie is among the Stylists of the year. Still on Craig, check out his Ah-Mazing collection called The Craig Zoowie Collection where he collaborated with T.Z.M Fashion House Creative Director/ Designer Thembani Mubochwa. His Collection offers gentlemen all over the world an opportunity to express their refined taste and individuality through what they wear with ease. Mbo Mahocs, Gilmore Tee and Pokello Nare are all nominated in the fashionista of the year category (Imagine that!).

Unfortunately we didn’t have nominees in the Most Stylish Artist category which shows a gap that needs to be filled as far as collaborations between Designers and artists is concerned. We also lacked nominees in the best dressed celebrity despite having an increase in celebrities representing us on Regional and International platforms. Both these categories were dominated by South Africa, possible because of their mileage on DSTV which covers a huge chunk of Africa. We need to see our local fashion designers advertise their apparel through artists in videos, live shows, and films; this broadens the market to regional and International. Artists need to know that brand image is a very important aspect in their artistry and this is something fashion designers can easily take care of. Also in as much as our models are elevating, we need to tap into International markets with as much impact as we are pushing the local agenda. It is interesting that there is a Most Fashionable Music Video which again proves the need to incorporate Fashion in our music and film.

Funny enough we don’t have Zim nominees for the most stylish Africans in the diaspora (although I could name quite a number off head but hey), maybe our brothers and sisters need to come back home lol. We are rather surprised that Jackie Mgido of Vault Cosmetics and Gamuchirai Melissa Manyika of Make Up by Gamu aren’t nominated for the Make Up artist of the year category despite the work they put out especially in southern Africa this year. We might also need to expand our blog to include a tab on fashion seeing that we (Zimbabwe) are not represented in the best fashion blogger.

We are excited for the Zim nominees and also feel challenged by the untapped opportunities that we have added on our 2017 To Do List. Now this is what we have to do to make sure the awards come home:

The voting process is being done via two official platforms; website and social media. Visit for the voting guidelines or alternatively use #Asfas2016Nominee #Asfa2016 and your specific nominee’s hashtag on twitter and Instagram. For example to vote for Gilmore Tee on twitter simply tweet: #iVoteGilmoreTee #Asfa2016 #Asfa2016Nominee. All the best to all Zimbabwean Nominees!
