Dates have been set, auditions done, posters sent out, and now the festival guide is out. The 15th edition of the International Images Film Festival for Women will take place from the 26th of August to the 3rd of September under the theme: Women Alive: Women of Heart. The theme celebrates for the third year running, tough women who possess the rare gift of loving unconditionally; daring women, women who despite daily challenges emerge stronger. With thirty four countries exhibiting over six venues (with Stimulus Innovation Centre introduced as a new venue) in nine days, the program is packed with eventful and interesting films. We also see the return of the SADC competition to the festival with Malawi, Tanzania, Zimbabwe and South Africa being represented. Just a quick glance at the program will make you appreciate efforts the festival propels in development of a platform for African women filmmakers.
The Opening Ceremony will be at Ster Kinekor Borrowdale on the 26th of August with an exciting new voice from Belgium, the film Black directed by Adil El Arbi and Billal Fallah featuring breathtaking new young talent, Martha Canga Antonio. The closing and Awards ceremony will be on the 3rd of September which is when the Awards ceremony will be held. The Juries will include Kudzai Chimbaira, Tongai Arnold Chirisa, Terence Mapurisana, Matrid Nyagah, Daphne Jena, and Prof. Viola Milton among others.
“IIFF continues its history of amplifying the voices of women and girls through film narratives by bringing an eclectic mixture of films from thirty four countries to five different venues. Films that feature African women are often stereotypical and portray the women as victims rather than successful agents triumphing over their environment and challenges. This year’s festival opens with the brilliant feature film Black which engages with the theme of a young black woman involved in gang warfare, a theme that has become popular among young European filmmakers of colour.”
– Laura F. Ganda – Festival Director (Trainee)
